Drawing on canvas

The drawing is the foundation for the painting.  As you can see, I use both the computer and the black and white hard copy as a reference.  After determining the desired size of the painting, the next step is drawing the dog on the canvas.  An accurate drawing is essential in establishing a good foundation.  I choose to draw using a grid system.  Most paintings are larger than their source, and by gridding the artwork, the transfer to canvas is more accurate.  A 5” square photo can be easily transferred to a 20” square canvas with little to no distortion.  I use both a hard copy of the photo and my computer to aid in this process.  I then transfer the information I glean there by drawing on the canvas with oil paint thinned with turpentine.
