Block-in

Block-in

Initial underpainting.  Much of the painting is resolved at this point.

Block-in is an art term for the under painting.  An artist has a multitude of decisions to make at this point: light source; lights and darks; values; colors; background and style.  Any, or all of these, can change as the painting progresses, but you have to start somewhere.  This initial layer is virtually an experiment with the decisions you’ve made.  One beauty of the oil medium is that changes can and will be made until you are satisfied.  At this stage, details start to emerge and a real likeness of the dog is established.
